About Me
- Name: marlena rivers
- Location: Brooklyn, New York, United States
my name is marlena rivers...yeah, sounds like a fake name or porn star name, and it is a fake name. no i'm not a porn actress, but i had to create a name for this blog. because i'm not OUT at work about the bipolar thing... so some of this blog is about the dual identity thing... because it is a trip and i feel like a double agent, posing at work as a "normal" person and out to some friends and family... This blog used to focus on my relationship with my little doggie but he died in 2009. It also used to involve comic strips. I hope to bring that back sometime soon. Meanwhile I'll be focusing on the idea of "hiding" my bipolar disorder and what that is like for me, and if it has changed since having the "baby" who is not a baby any more!

Hi Marlena! First of all, I always love your cartoons! How is Elvis?
Everyone's experience with Zyprexa is different, of course. For me, the weight gain was INCREDIBLE, and it started pretty quickly. It made me crave sweets so badly that I would stop on the way home from work and buy a can of FROSTING, eat HALF of it that night, and eat the other half the next night. Just imagine a few months of that and weight gain. Unreal. That's the reason I stopped.
As far as mood? If you don't get crazy weight gain, it worked well for my mood. I don't get full-blown manias, but for some bizarre reason, mania medication works for my depression. If you don't get the crazies of appetite, then Zyprexa may be for you.
But, in the end, I REALIZE it comes down to your sanity or your life; however, I just feel with so many choices out there, I don't have to choose from one medication, you know?
I'm crossing my fingers for you for Zyprexa! It's a GREAT medication for those who can take it!
hi kansassunflower,
thanks a lot. that was helpful. i will not take it for long period. trying to get back to breastfeeding. supposedly noone escapes the food issue with it. i heard from soemoen else that the cravigns and hunger did not start right away. i jsut want to be off the drug asap.
Hi Marlena
Hope you're feeling a bit better.
Olanzapine was very effective in reducing my mania but like kansasss I developed an insatiable appetite and put on a lot of weight. Worse though was I had atypical oedema (edema to you yanks) which bloated not just my legs but all my body and even my face and I had to stop it. I think I was down to earth in 3-4 weeks and stopped it then for chlorpromazine (thorazine).
If you are still worried about Zyprexa in milk, it seems to be OK. There is an abstract here... http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sites/entrez?cmd=Retrieve&db=PubMed&list_uids=12900304&dopt=AbstractPlus
Hope that you are feeling better soon :) Medications are annoying, aren't they?
I am starting a new one myself today and then I will be on 2 mood stabilizers and 1 anti-depressants and then Zanax when I am anxious...What a wonderful life.
As you know, we have to try different cocktails and things will work out for sure :)
Hang in there!!
